Project Overview

As part of a graphic design course at Cambrian College, I undertook the challenge of designing both the cover and interior spreads for “Nuclear,” a magazine conceptualized to explore transformative human inventions and their societal impacts. This project was an exercise in integrating complex editorial concepts with compelling design to engage readers visually and intellectually.

The Challenge

The challenge was to encapsulate abstract and critical themes like innovation and societal impact in a visually engaging magazine format. The design needed to be visually striking to grab attention while remaining subtle enough to encourage deeper exploration of the content, balancing between visual appeal and the conveyance of serious topics without becoming overwhelming or overly complex.

The Solution

The cover of “Nuclear” features innovative typography with the letter “A” split to symbolize nuclear fission, representing the theme of impactful human inventions. This design choice sets the tone for the magazine, suggesting a focus on breaking new ground and transformation. The accompanying hand graphic reaching upward introduces a human element, symbolizing effort and reach towards progress. Inside, the editorial layouts utilize structured grids and carefully selected imagery to guide the reader through the magazine, ensuring each page visually complements the content and enhances the overall narrative flow.
